Pay once instead of every month
The Lay Theme license is a one-time purchase. After that, you only keep paying for your own webhosting. Cargo, Readymag, Framer, Squarespace, Webflow and Wix require recurring plans to keep a published website online. Over several years, this can make Lay Theme much cheaper.
Independent for more than 10 years.

No investors. No shareholders. Just an independent tool made by someone who genuinely cares about it.
Lay Theme
Lay Theme is a visual WordPress website builder made for designers and creative portfolios. It runs on your own webhosting, so you keep control of the WordPress installation, files, content and code.
Lay Theme vs. Semplice
Semplice is probably the closest alternative to Lay Theme. Both are one-time purchases, run on your own WordPress installation and are made for designer portfolios. Semplice currently lists its Single edition at $119 before tax for one domain. Lay Theme Single costs €59 before applicable VAT.
Semplice has its own visual editor, portfolio grids and design tools. Lay Theme also offers optional AI Mode, which can turn Figma Dev Mode designs into custom WordPress elements with editable fields. Semplice's current product and pricing pages do not list a comparable built-in workflow.
Lay Theme vs. Cargo
Cargo is a hosted website builder made for designers and artists. It offers templates, flexible visual layouts, real-time collaboration and custom CSS and scripts. One subscription can publish multiple websites on Cargo domains, while custom domain connections are limited by the plan.
Cargo is subscription-based and the website stays on Cargo's hosted platform. Its current product documentation does not list a workflow comparable to Lay Theme AI Mode, which can turn a Figma design into a custom WordPress element with editable content fields.
Lay Theme vs. Readymag
Readymag is a design-focused hosted builder for portfolios, editorials, presentations, landing pages and other highly visual websites. It offers free composition, animations, separate layouts for different screen sizes, collaboration and custom code on eligible plans.
Readymag uses free and recurring paid plans for publishing and hosting. Its current product and plan pages do not list a workflow comparable to Lay Theme AI Mode for turning Figma designs into editable custom WordPress elements.
Lay Theme vs. Framer
Framer combines visual design, publishing and hosting in one service. It can be a good fit when you want an integrated hosted workflow and prefer paying for a recurring plan instead of managing WordPress and separate webhosting.
Lay Theme vs. Squarespace
Squarespace is an all-in-one hosted website builder with templates, hosting and support included in a recurring plan. It can be a good fit when convenience and a guided template workflow matter more than control of the underlying installation.
Lay Theme vs. Webflow
Webflow offers a detailed visual development environment and a hosted CMS. It can be a good fit for complex visual systems when you want its integrated platform and are comfortable with its recurring site plans.
Lay Theme vs. Wix
Wix combines templates, visual editing, hosting and an app marketplace. It can be a good fit when you want many services in one hosted platform and do not need to manage a separate WordPress installation.
When Lay Theme is a good fit
Choose Lay Theme when you want to create a highly individual portfolio, prefer a one-time theme license, want to choose your own webhost and want the flexibility of WordPress. The Gridder handles the normal layout work, while optional AI Mode can add custom elements based on your own Figma designs.
When a hosted builder may fit better
A hosted builder may be more convenient when you want hosting, account management and the editor in one service and do not want to maintain a WordPress website yourself.
